STATEMENT: PDE Action Supports Parental Oversight and Transparency Act

Congresswoman Hageman’s and Congresswoman Miller’s Parental Oversight and Transparency Act puts much-needed teeth on the Pupil Protection Rights Amendment (PPRA). Schools too often forget to give parents proper notification about potentially invasive surveys given to their children during the school day.

This bill amends the General Education Provisions Act to ensure that parents are provided at least 14 days advance notice about the administration of surveys regarding private student and family information, including but not limited to political affiliations and religious belief. The bill also requires that a school obtain written consent from the parent to administer the survey.

This bill will strengthen parents’ ability to opt their children out of intrusive and divisive surveys. Parents Defending Education Action is proud to endorse this bill.
