State Board of Education
Who's on your state board of education?
The Wyoming State Board of Education consists of 12 members, including one teacher and the state superintendent. The members are appointed by the governor and approved by the state senate—except for the state superintendent, who is elected by partisan ballot.
When's the next election/appointment?
Board members serve six year terms. Four members will reach their term limit in 2023. One member will finish her term in 2024. Two more seats will be up in 2025, and another four seats will be up in 2027. Read more about your state board of education members here.
When's the next curriculum update?
The state board of education reviews standards for various subject areas every nine years. Social studies and Career and Vocational Education are set to be revised during the 2023- 2024 school year. The English Language Arts review process began during the 2022-2023 school year and will extend into the following school year. Read more about past, present, and future curriculum updates here.
Department of Education
Title 21 of the Wyoming Statutes states:
“There shall be a separate and distinct state department designated as the state department of education which shall under the supervision of the state superintendent and consist of the state superintendent and such divisions, staffed by personnel and provided with facilities the state superintendent determines necessary to assist him in the proper and efficient discharge of his respective duties.”

Just like Congress, your state legislature is divided into a House and Senate. Your House and Senate Education committee members for 2023 can be found here.
These committees conduct hearings, review, and amend bills proposed by a member of their legislative chamber. They also review bills after they have been passed by the other chamber of legislature. Remember, both chambers must pass a bill before it goes to the governor’s desk for a signature or a veto.
Recent Education Bills Introduced in State Legislature
- Parents Rights Wyoming lawmakers did not introduce any parents’ rights in education, public school transparency, anti-race or gender theory, or other related bills last year. Lawmakers did amend the state’s existing parental rights law, Wyoming Statute 14-2-206, to apply to judicial proceedings involving parental rights and custody.
Several school boards in Wyoming held school board races in 2022. You can read more about those elections in this WyoFile article, or this article from Cowboy State Daily (advisory: the latter article includes graphic images from books found in public school libraries).
You can find out more about your school district’s school board, and when their next election will occur, on the school district’s website or on your county website.
