STATEMENT: PDE Action Supports College Cost Reduction Act
November 6, 2024
College debt has long been a concern for American families. Over the past two decades, tuition at these higher education institutions have ballooned by more than 150 percent, causing individuals to be saddled with debt before they even receive a diploma. Instead of tackling the root causes of what has caused this drastic increase, government officials – as most recently seen from the Biden-Harris administration – have focused their efforts on covering up this cost crisis by having taxpayers foot the bill while allowing colleges and universities to continue to raise their prices with little to no accountability.
This is an unsustainable model that will continue to hurt families and crush them financially.
As an organization whose mission it is to represent the best interests of parents and students, it is reassuring to see leaders in Congress put forward the bipartisan College Cost Reduction Act which aims to increase transparency and empower families and prospective students with the tools they need to make informed financial decisions regarding their education. It also seeks to ensure colleges and universities are held accountable for ensuring students are aware of degree costs versus future earnings potential. These are winning strategies that will help families and directly counter the soaring costs of college degrees.
